At Telkomsel, we categorize our waste into four main groups: waste from indiHome modems, network equipment, SIM cards, and office building waste. Effective waste management, which includes activities like reutilization, reuse, and recycling, is essential for minimizing our environmental impact. We aim to embrace a circular economy approach to extend the life cycle of our products and manage the waste from our operations. As part of our commitment to being environmentally responsible, we aim to recycle and reuse our electronic waste (e-waste). This covers all types of e-waste, including network equipment, IT devices, and modems. Additionally, we aim to divert waste from our office buildings away from landfills.
We are focused on improving our sustainability efforts and reducing our environmental impact in our operations. To support this goal, we strive to recycle our product packaging, especially SIM cards and modems.
One notable effort is our partnership with PlusTik, aimed at managing low-value plastic waste. So far, in 2024 we’ve converted over 365 kg of waste from SIM cards into mobile phone holders, pavement blocks and trash bins. These items are being shared with retail outlets or used for new construction at our offices. In the second half of 2024, we transitioned the packaging for our regular products (Telkomsel Lite & ByU) from PET to paper. We are also using cardboard packaging instead of plastic for our IndiHome modems. Additionally, we reached a significant milestone by successfully producing 387,000 eSIMs in 2024, which also contributes to reducing physical waste from traditional SIM cards.
We understand the importance of water conservation in line with our commitment to sustainability. We make efforts to reduce our water use to tackle water scarcity and encourage better water management in our operations. One of the initiatives we have implemented is the Rain Water Harvesting system at our Headquarters, where collected rainwater will be used for cleaning the building’s windows and watering plants. By the end of 2024, we recorded 6.3 megaliter water usage in our Head Office.
