What is G20?

G20 is a multilateral cooperation forum that consists of 19 major countries and the European Union, which is the world’s major economies.

The importance of G20

G20 International Forum is an important part of the world because the G20 members represent more than 2/3 of the world's population, 75 percent of international trade, and 80 percent of the world's GDP. During the G20 events, there were several series of event to discuss various issues in the world including Indonesia in various sectors such as:

Finance Track

Finance Track is a discussion in the G20 forum that focuses on financial and economic issues, including:

  • Fiscal Policy
  • Monetary and Real Policies
  • Infrastructure Investment
  • Financial Regulation
  • Financial Inclusion
  • International Taxation

Sherpa Track

Sherpa Track is a discussion path in the G20 forum with broader fields outside of financial issues, including:

  • Anti-Corruption
  • Digital Economy
  • Employment
  • Agriculture
  • Education
  • Foreign Affairs
  • Culture
  • Health
  • Development
  • Environment
  • Tourism
  • Climate Sustainability
  • Trade, Investment, and Industry
  • Empower Initiative and Women Empowerment

G20 is considered a big help for the world to return to a growth path and to encourage several important reforms in the financial sector, especially in the series of handling the 2008 global financial crisis. The G20 also has pushed the world to improve tax policies and handling Covid-19 pandemic globally.

Indonesia also benefits from organizing the G20 as described below:

  • The G20 Presidency amid the pandemic has proven a good perception of Indonesia's economy and resilience in a time of crisis.
  • This presidential momentum only occurs once in a generation (every 20 years) and must be utilized as best as possible to add value to Indonesia's recovery, both in terms of economic activity and the confidence of the domestic and international community.
  • Indonesia can orchestrate the discussion at the G20 to have a positive impact on the recovery of local economic activity.
  • The G20 forum becomes an opportunity to show Indonesia's leadership in the international area, especially in the global economic recovery. From the regional perspective, the Presidency affirms Indonesia's leadership in the field of international diplomacy and economics in the region—considering that Indonesia is the only ASEAN country that is a member of the G20.
  • Indonesia becomes one of the focuses of attention in the world, especially for economic and financial players. It can be used to show the vast progress that Indonesia has made to the world, and then become the starting point for restoring the confidence of economic actors after the pandemic.
  • G20 meetings in Indonesia can also introduce tourism and Indonesia's superior products to the international community. So, it's expected to be able to drive the Indonesian economy.

When was the G20 founded?

The G20 was formed in 1999 at the initiation of the G7 member countries (United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan). The G20 embraces both developed and developing countries to overcome crises together that have a global impact, such as:

  • Mexican Peso Crisis in 1994
  • Asian Financial Crisis in 1997/1998
  • Russian Financial Crisis in 1998
  • Financial Crisis in 2007-2008

At the beginning, G20 was a meeting of the Ministers of Finance and the Governors of the Central Banks. However, since 2008, the G20 has presented Heads of State in summits and in 2010 discussions were also formed in the development sector. The next goal of the G20 is to achieve strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive global growth.
